Faster recovery from purpura using a topical cream containing bicyclic monoterpene diols

The study used a randomized, controlled, double-blinded design and included 20 subjects. Each subject underwent a procedure to create purpura (bruising) on both forearms using a 585-nm pulse dye laser. The subjects then applied either the BMT diol cream (0.034% wt/vol) or a placebo cream (Eucerin) to the respective forearms twice a day for 17 days.

The results showed that both the BMT diol cream and placebo cream led to a 50% reduction in lesion size within 7 days. However, on day 3 and day 7, the sites treated with the BMT diol cream were significantly lighter than the sites treated with the placebo cream. In fact, on day 3, the BMT diol treated site was 71% lighter on average compared to the placebo site. This suggests that the BMT diol cream, by improving microcirculation, facilitated the clearing of darkly colored blood components that contribute to the dark color of the bruise.

The findings of this study support the hypothesis that improving microcirculation can enhance the resolution of bruising and improve its appearance. It is consistent with previous findings that BMT diols can also reduce the appearance of dark under-eye circles.
