Special Features of SugarThick™

-SugarThick™ can increase viscosity in many kinds of surfactant/detergent systems. Final viscosity is formula-dependent and works best when the formula has sufficient surfactant active matter and a suitable micelle structure.

- Can help reduce skin irritation from harsh detergents such as Sulfates (SLS, SLES) as well. It is therefore ideal for use in baby products such as baby shampoo or baby liquid soap.

- Does not interfere with the formation of bubbles or foam This makes it suitable for use in formulas that require a lot of bubbles or foam.

- Gives a good skin-feel, not greasy

- gives a transparent gel texture

 

Irritation of Surfactant or Detergent and how to reduce irritation

The surfactant in the formula combines to form micelles, which are formed when the surfactant concentration reaches the Critical Micelle Concentration (CMC). Irritation can be reduced by lowering CMC, which SugarThick™ is unique in reducing CMC well. This results in reducing skin irritation from detergents well

Use: For adding viscosity (thickener) to liquid soap. face wash Cleanser Shampoo

How to mix: Add after the water phase and primary surfactants are already uniform, but before final cooling and before salt/electrolyte adjustment, fragrance, color, heat-sensitive ingredients and final pH adjustment. SugarThick™ will melt into a liquid/soft melt at 50-60 degrees. Practically, 55-60 degrees is a good trial range. It can be mixed in formulas with this temperature range, or if you don't want to warm up the whole formula, warm SugarThick™ outside until it becomes a uniform liquid/soft melt and then add slowly into the warm surfactant phase with good circulation. Avoid overheating as it will cause SugarThick to lose its quality.

Pre-dispersion method: For easier incorporation, SugarThick™ can be made into a smooth warm paste/concentrate first by taking a small portion of formula water or diluted surfactant phase, heating to about 50-60 degrees, then slowly adding SugarThick™ while mixing until smooth before returning this concentrate slowly to the main warm batch. Avoid dumping dry flakes directly into a cold base or an already-thick surfactant concentrate, because the outside can wet/melt while the inside remains as grains.

Mixing / troubleshooting: SugarThick™ should be handled as a meltable surfactant thickener, not as an instant-hydrating gum. If flakes or granules remain visible, the material has not fully melted, wetted, dispersed and incorporated into the surfactant micelle system, so viscosity may not develop reliably. Use enough mixing during addition to prevent lumps and dead zones. After uniformity is reached, reduce to low-speed mixing to minimize foam and air entrapment. Do not judge final viscosity while hot; cool to room temperature and allow the system to equilibrate before final viscosity reading. If salt/electrolyte is used, add it stepwise only after SugarThick™ is fully incorporated, because excess electrolyte can reduce or collapse surfactant-system viscosity. Low surfactant active matter, high electrolyte, high solvent/polyol/hydrotrope load, fragrance/oil/solubilizer load, extreme pH, or insufficient water can weaken the thickening response.

Utilization rate: 1-5% (according to the required viscosity, 1-3% recommended)

Product characteristics: Light yellow flake powder. Melt/disperse according to the recommended mixing method.

Solubility: Can dissolve in water and oil with proper heating and mixing.
